Migrate SSR 2013 database to new server

I need a solution

Hi,

apologies if I'm covering old ground, but since moving to SSR 2013 Management Solution from SSR2011, I now wish to migrate the database from Sqlserver 2005 to Sqlserver 2012 and was wondering what the procedure is.

The database would be on a different host and named instance, ie. not the default mssqlserver.

Many thanks in advance.

Symantec System Recovery 2013 Hangs SBS Server 2003 SP1

I need a solution

When running a full complete backup of the C partition of the server it completely locks up, requireing a hard reset to be carried out.

This is a brand new install of the Backup Exec software, installed just last week, and has been happening ever since it was first installed.

Things I have done to attempt to resolve the issue:

1. Run live update to service pack the BESR software to the lastest version.

2. Switched off disk quota management (saw another example of SBS 2003 mentioned in the forums with this issue and it related to quotas).

3. Run latest patches for VSS service.

4. Disabled all exchange services, although this is a SBS server, no Exchange is used on this server, client uses POP mail.

5. Removed and reinstalled BESR software, and patched again.

I can run a full and subsequent incremental backup of the D drive which is a second partition on the same physical drive. When I try to do the same on the C drive, it spends 30 seconds at 5% and then as soon as it moves to 6% the server locks, keyboard and mouse are unresponsive and I have to pull the power from the server and restart it. There is nothing reported in the event log of either the BESR software or within the Windows event log, presumably due to the way the server hard locks before any events can be recorded.

I've installed this software on many servers, both 2003 and 2008, and have never seen this issue in the past. I'm really keen to get the issue resolved as soon as possible - so thank anyone for their help in advance.

Master Server move to new hardware

I need a solution

Hi all;

First, our details:

Windows 2008 R2, Netbackup 7.6.0.1, two media servers.

Just wondering if moving to new hardware has been eased by any of the recent upgrades?  I haven't looked in a few years and it used to be quite a pain.  Can a master server be moved to new hardware with a different name now?  If not, what are the exact procedures for moving to new hardware?

Just as an added note, I found the old articles on this but seeing if there are any updates - did a search through the admin guide(s) and not finding anything.

Thanks,

Jim

NetBackup Status Code 24 - Possible Parameters to Check

I need a solution

Hi Friends

Receiving Status Code 24 is now becaming very common in our Infrastructure, where we are backing up alomost 7000 boxes using 10 different master servers. I agree there is a Technote Available from Symantec : http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?pag... for troubleshooting Status Code 24 Failures, but most of the time we are getting the situation where this is not enough to fix the issues.

Can someone please help me to understand that what are the parameters need to be checked in Client / Media / Master server and the tuning can be made to fix the issue. Also is there any tool is avaiable to determine the root cause of the Status 24 Failure.

Help would be highly appriciated

Question about Netbackup licensing and Restore of old backups

I need a solution

Hi,

I have no experience of Netbackup.... But I have a customer that have used Netbackup for several years to backup a couple of OpenVMS clients. If they stop using Netbackup and alters to another backup system - what happens if they need to restore a 2 year old backup taken with Netbackup? Are they allowed to start NBU for restore purposes without license? Or do they need to have the product licensed for the whole period they need to be able to restore the backups? Someone who knows?

Partitioning tape library between two NBU domains (from 6.5 to 7.5)

I need a solution

HI I wondered if anyone could give me some tips on my thoughts around the following:

I have a NBU 6.5 environment with two IBM3584 tape libraries. Most servers backup up to disk at night, then this is off to tape during the day.

I also have a NBU 7.5 environment which has 2 NBU 5220s, with a master server. This is where I need to get to from the 6.5 envirnoment.

I am in a position where I *might* run into disk space issues on these appliances due to the amount of large oracle databases that have yet to be migrated over (my understanding is that the rate of de-dup is not as high on this data). It's a catch 22 as I won't know how it will go until I actually get these backups over onto the 7.5 environment. There is of course the possibility that the amount of disk I have available will actually be more than adequate.......

So I thought I would like to be able to partition my tape library to allow use by BOTH nbumaster servers (the 6.5 and the 7.5) - can anyone tell me if this is achievable, and worthwhile? Even if one drive were available to the new environment, this might help in the long run?

Else, I may have to opt to lower the data retention on the backup policies until I can have all of the backups over onto the 7.5 appliances, and THEN move the tape libraries over for use in this environment.

Has anyone else had to think about this, or an alternate solution?

Many Thanks

Staging Location for GRT backup job is set to C:\

I need a solution

Dear All,

I was aware that in order to have single item recovery using GRT a temporary space is required to stage the DB for example for exchange and then from there we can pull individual item. This is case when restoring from a tape.

Today I noticed that in backup exec 2012 under config settings > storage there is staging location also set to C:\ and this is for backup jobs. Before I never noticed this item and now I want to know that does backup exec also requires same huge amount of space when running GRT based backup jobs to tape ?

See attached picture with red outlined portion. Since, it doesn't make sense to me to assign another big partition to Bexec server for GRT backup jobs so for this I need to understand how much space it requires in staging area.

Kind Regards,

Restoring virtual machine using Netbackup CLI

I need a solution

Hay there!

I'm running Netbackup 7.6 on a win2k12 server, which acts both as master and media server.

I'm using it in order to back up VMware virtual machines, and now I'm tring to automate my restore proccess.

After reading about the nbrestorevm cmdlt, I feel that I still cant' figure out how to properly use it, and was hoping that someone here could guide me thrugh it.

The main things that I need to achieve are the following:

1. Restore the VM from the latest backup.

2. Name the restored VM diffrently from the source VM.

3. Restore the VM to a diffrent data store.

4. Use the same data store for all the VM's VMDK files.

5. Retain the VM's original hardware version.

6. Retain the original network configuration.

So... how the hell do I do that? Any help would be much appreciated!

Understanding Netbackup 5220 appliances Catalog/Machanics.

The base unit assigns 930GB for catalog what is this for? staging area etc. We have implemented advanced disk pool for catalog backups currently I do not  have a physical tape library attched to the infrastructure just yet.  The reasoning behind this I only carry out only full backups via accelerator the catalog will grow therefore to backup a large catalog quickly via using a advanced disk pool which has better read/write performance. Any suggestions of taking another copy of the catalog as we start migrating clients into the new appliance domain asap. Can I do cross site catalog backup for further protection in the mean time? I also configured AIR replication.  All testing is complete now just bring on VMware then start full blown migration.

Backup Exec Slot Priority

I need a solution

My company does daily backups and swaps tapes out daily (on Monday night, we only have Monday tapes loaded).  Once the tapes are used we send them offsite using a tape pickup/storage/delivery service, and to do that the tapes have to be labeled with barcoded labels.  We use multiple libraries for multiple servers that we host.  I have recently been asked to fill the empty slots of the libraries with blank spare tapes in the event that there is more data than the daily rotation tapes are able to hold.  The first day was a disaster when only the spare tapes were used.  I thought I had it fixed when I discovered Settings>Storage>Media overwrite options>Overwrite recyclable media contained in the targeted media set before over writing scratch media.

I had forgotten to take into account that every month, we remove the month end tapes from the rotation and put new tapes into the rotation, thereby making the rotation tapes also seen as scratch tapes, and then BE starts using a mix of rotation and spare tapes.  I've read many other posts that say to use partitions, but I don’t think that would work in this case because I still want the job to be able to pull from the spares if needed, which is why they are there in the first place.  Is there any way I can control which library slots have priority in Backup Exec without using partitions?

NetBackup 7.6 Windows 2012 Storage Server HP StoreEasy

I need a solution

I have a an HP StoreEasy appliance that needs backed up.  It's running Windows 2012 Storage Server and per the most recent SCL that's not supported as a NetBackup 7.6 client.  I have ~40TB of data on this.  I'm also running NBU 5230's for master and media servers.  Please provide thoughts on the following scenarios.

1.  Install NBU 7.6 client although it's not technically supported.

OR

2.  Mount the shares on a Windows 2008 R2 server and backup the shares leveraging Accelerator & Client sided dedupe.  Would there be an issue recovering ACLs?

OR

3.  What would you recommend?

Thanks
