BE 2012: Failing with weird VSS error?

I need a solution

Can annybody advise me on what this error (from the BE job log) means?

Job ended: Thursday, March 06, 2014 at 8:41:45 PM
Completed status: Failed
Final error: 0xe0009425 - The Shadow Copy Components file system has been modified to contain only user-defined data, such as Backup Exec Deduplication Disk Storage (PDDE) and Distributed File System Replcation (DFSR).  All other operating system-related data is now incorporated into System State.  As a result, existing Shadow Copy Components file system backups and backup sets are incompatible with Backup Exec 2012.  You should edit the job, delete the Shadow Copy Components selection, and then run the job again.
Final error category: System Errors

For additional information regarding this error refer to link V-79-57344-37925

The message seems clear that I need to simply edit the job and deselect the Shadow Copy Components item in the list of checkboxes, which I did just now and am running the job again to see what happens.  It's backup to tape, and will take the whole day so I'll check tonight's job log. But what's confusing is what this actuall means?

Just that I do not think I was getting this error a month  or more ago, and it was only within the past few weeks that I tried deduplication.  Is it possible that by creating and then deleting deduplication storage devices and jobs that I've put something into the selections list that's now stuck and gives this error?  Before now, the server was Fully Selected - everytihng checked - but I don't recall whether or not this Shadow Copy Components item existed or not.

Thanks.

Netbackup and server refresh

I need a solution

Can you think of the best way how to deal with Netbackup when a server gets refreshed

The scenario

The Server in our remote office is getting refreshed to a server 2008 server. Currently this WAN server  OldServer1 is backed up through Netbackup over the WAN using client dedupe and we want the new server NEwServer1 to be backed up in the same way . The new server will be having a new name .

Will the bacup be treated as a new server and a FULL compltee backup done over teh WAN ? How can we make used of the data in dedeupe pool and if possible reduce the time of the first backup ??

Whats methods are you guys emplying out there especailly for large file servers?

we are currenlty upgrading out environment from Netbackup 7.5 to 7.6 if that will also help

Thanks in advance guys

Backup multiple copies in policy vs Vault

I need a solution

Using NBU 7.6.0.1 we have always used vaulting to create off-site backups, but are starting to have problems with how long it takes for duplication to complete.  Now we are considering creating multiple backups in the policies instead of using duplication to create our off-site tapes.  My question is will backups take twice as long since it is writing everything to tape twice?

Backup Exec slow on SQL backup

I need a solution

We have a windows server 2008R2 box running SQL server hosted on a VMware box.  The server has 2 nics, one going to our main network the other is for iSCSI to the SAN which holds ONE of our databases.  We backup 5 other VMware servers ranging between 2003 and 2008, one being another SQL box.  Normal throughput on the servers is about gigabit speed.  For this particualr server we see 100MB.  As a test I tried to backup a database located on the local VMware guest, same speed, then tried to backup just some OS files, all tests show the same speed.  Both NICs are operating at GB speed.  Suggestions?  We are up to date on patches on the server and backup exec.  Backup exec is running on a physical server with an attached tape device.

Backup Exec 11D does not backup anything, just does endless backup scans

I need a solution

Greetings, all!

I've had a BE11D/Windows 2003 32 bit server with an IBM LTO5 tape drive for 3 years now. Last Fall, I stopped getting backup reports. I discovered that the server was down but brought it back online quickly. Since then, nothing has been written to tape or even backed up by the system. I see the backup scans running but that's it. I have to kill these jobs as they seem to never end. I updated the Symantec drivers for my tape drive & can inventory the tapes, but BE11D does not write to it & does not backup. I checked the credentials & tested them, all passing.

Please let me know if you see anything I have missed or haven't tried!

Thanks!

System Recovery 2013 Licencing Query

I need a solution

Hi,

Im thinking of using SSR2013 to snapschot all my servers.

I have 40 servers that i would like to take images of on a weekly schedule.

Do i need to buy 40 copies of the software or does 1 licence cover X amount of agents?

Thanks

OpsCenter (Analytics)

It would be great to be able to copy many reports from private report list to public in mass versus 1x1.

Byte Count vs Tape Capacity

I need a solution

Backup Exec 2010 R3 Service Pack 4 - Small Business Server Suite  (Media Server Version 13.0 Rev 5204 (32-bit).  Administration Consol Version 13.0 Rev 5204.1270 (32-bit) Desktop and Laptop Option Version 3.1 Rev 3.46.06a.  FIPS version - not enabled.

Server 2003 with a Quantum Ultrium 3 deck.

I'm trying to figure out why a client's backup job has stopped completing succesfully.  The size of the back up has grown steadily in the last few months mostly due to Exchange growth and the number of Quickbook backups they are keeping.  The jobs are failing indicating the backup window has expired.  The jobs typically complete in 2hrs, the windows is 6hrs.  After troubleshooting I find that the tapes are full.  I have done the following since making this determination.

- Checked overwrite and apend settings.  For purposes of trying to get successful backup I have set overwrite protection to none and apend to infinite.  The job is set to use hardware compression if available otherwise software.

- Did a quick erase, verified the tape was 'blank' and put the tape back into the correct media set.

- Ran a successful test job that shows the total byte count of 201,976,547,800 bytes or about 188GB. It further shows an Online overwrite capacity of 400,308.00MB or about 390GB which is what the physical tape shows under Devices.

- I went through and deleted about 40GB of data to reduce the size of the backup job.

Ok.  So I ran a job last night.  The result - it failed.  I assume it was waiting for a second tape.  The tape is now full showing used capacity is 389.7 GB of 390.9 GB available.  Ok. The tape is full.  However, byte count in the job monitor is showing a byte count of 183,392,700,450 bytes or about 170GB.   In my job history I have successful jobs on a single tape that were 246,688,635,872 bytes or about 229GB.

So I expect with compression to have the ability to backup ~300GB of data.  Yet my blank tape is full at 390GB but I have a byte count of 170GB.   I know I'm missing something here but I can't figure it out - never had a BE problem in 15 years that I couldn't figure out myself.  I'm open to any suggestions.  Thanks.

Mike

BE 2012: Backup says "GRT-enabled restores not possible"

I need a solution

Every backup I've ever ran on this server (2008 R2 Hyper-V host, some VMs all 2008 R2) under both BE 2010 R2, R3, and BE 2012, have always finished with this Completed with Exceptions warning that says GRT-enabled restores are not possible due to something about not being able to gather metadata from within the VM.  The RAWS agents are indeed installed on all VMs.  Here's a clip from the job log:

V-79-57344-38726 - Backup Exec failed to connect to virtual machine 'XYZMACHINE' and was unable to collect the necessary metadata to restore individual application items. You cannot perform GRT-enabled restores of application data from this backup. You must install the Agent for Windows and the virtual machine tools provided by your host software on the virtual machine.

Well I certainly have the Hyper-V basic integartion tools installed, and the RAWS agent is installed.  It seems a bit sucpicious that I get this same error from every VM on the host though so I am willing to try someihng on a VMbut the odds are this is something either common to all or a problem with the media server.

I should note that SEP 12.1.4 is install on all systems in case that factors in.  Disabling it for half a day and leaving a server without protection while doing a est backup is not an option though I'm of course happy to modify firewall settings if anyboyd thinks that's it - but note that on the firewall I have a rule that allows all traffic to/from the servers to each other.

Yet one would think that this type of error, assuming all else is installed and working to connect to the RAWS agent, wouldn't be a factor but who knows?  Can anybody advise on how to troubleshoot this?

Thank you.

BE 2012: why when tape drive powered off, wont' come online?

I need a solution

I"m not sure how many members of this forum have experience with operating single-server/singe-tape drive setups but as this is a Dell server, using a Dell LTO5 drive,I have to hpoe this is extremely common.

A user today accidently powered off the tape drive instead of hitting eject.  He realizes his mistake, powered it on, tape drive is powered on and all green.

However BE can never recognize this.  If I right-click the drive and take the checkmark off of Offline, that makes no difference.

In the past hte only solut8ion has ever been to reboot the server, but I have to think that SAS-attached tape drives have better smart etchnology than that?

I am using the BE-suplied driver, and I recognize this could be something happening in Windows but this setup is about as generic and ubiquitous as they come so I hope it's something easily addressable.  Or am I stuck rebooting the server every time the drive loses power?

Thanks!

Error- Mount Failed

I need a solution

Server 2003 running Symantec backup Exec 11d.

We are trying to backup exchange and a shared folder to a local external USB hard drive.

The backup's used to work, but suddenly they do not run anymore. They will actually run for days/weeks and I'll have to hit cancel on the jobs, the error it shows is -error - mount failed- operation aborted. There are no numbers or anything with any more information.

I have wiped the external hard drives and recreated the backup-to-disk folders ( one for exchange and one for the shared drive) and recreated the jobs.

The status for the backup-to-disk's folders are "Ready". I have not created any new media though ( not sure how to or if I need to).

Does anyone have any clue what could be wrong here? If someone could link me a step-by-step on backing up to a external usb HD for 11d that would be great as I cannot find anything, and I am sure I am missing something.

Catalog Recovery through AIR

I do not need a solution (just sharing information)

Hi All,

I recently checked AIR feature for replicating de-duplicated data to DR site, however today i spoke with Symantec support. I suggested about catalog replication and do a tape less DR catalog recovery rather than building Catalog through DR Image file

What are everyone's views on this?

An error occurred creating or accessing the directory specified for this operation. Ensure that the directory is accessible and can be written to

I need a solution

Hello all. I receive the error in this forum post title when attempting to recover an Exchange 2007 mailbox message in Backup Exec 2012 v 14.0 running on a Windows Server 2003 R2 server. The mailbox message in need or recovery is from a January month backup residing on a 1TB eSata external drive (Iomega). I did the following to recover the mailbox message. I connected the January backup drive. Logged into the Backup Exec server computer. Launched the restore "wizard" in backup exec on our email/exchange server. I selected microsoft exchange, then mailbox message, then the Microsoft exchange user mailbox messages I wanted to restore. After choosing the mailbox messages, I chose the defaults the rest of the way. After the wizard ended, I was taken to the "servers" view in Backup Exec. On our email server "restoring" began with a timer bar that got up to 2 seconds then failed with the message: V-79-57344-4611 - An error occurred creating or accessing the directory X specified for this operation. Ensure that the directory is accessible and can be written to. The System logon account for Backup Exec has full control permission to the "staging" path for the January drive. After receiving the error, I disconnected our January drive then connected Thursday drive (last night's backup that ran successfully), launched the restore process (restoring different mailbox messages) and it resulted in a success. So, I assumed this was because the Thursday drive had already been mounted in Backup Exec since it had finished a successful backup job a few hours before. I then disconnected Thursday and reconnected January. Then I attempted to mount January by doing an Inventory and catalog job (I read that in a backup exec forum here...) and running the restore job but it still failed quickly. Backup Exec forum: can you help me? Where should I go from here? I created a case with Symantec but have yet to hear from them. Thanks!

Restore fails with Error EA390013, copy drive fails also

I need a solution

I'm trying to replace my 160GB drive with a larger 250GB drive.  I'm running version SSR 2011 Desktop 10.0.3.45857 on Win 7 x86 OS.  I have only 2 Recovery points and bothe fail when I install the new drive and boot with the recovery disk of the same version mentioned above.  It appears to be at the very end and "Error EA390013: At end of Something" comes up.  When I scan the disk through anaylize it doesn't have any data restored mainly the Windows default folders, like Windows, Users - but only default and Public. Both rescovery points fail the same way.  There never appeared to be anything wrong with the 160GB drive it is just getting close to full.

So next I reinstalled the original 160GB drive and booted to it with the larger drive also installed.   I ran copy drive but it too fails at 96% with --

"High Priority Error: Error EC8F17B3: Cannot complete copying of  (C:\) drive.
Error EC8F0409: Cannot copy source drive to destination location.
Error EA390013: At end of something. 0xEA390013 (Symantec System Recovery)
 (UMI:V-281-3215-6067)"

What do any of these errors mean?  Too vague.  I just ran Windows error checking on the 160GB drive, it found nothing.

Is this error due to my 160GB source drive or is there something wrong with the new 250GB drive?

Any help is appreciated.

Reboot of library in cmd line

I need a solution

Hi Team,

We are using HP MSL G3 library for our duplication purpose.

Is it possible to reboot the library from the command line mode in Windows?
